Small home office

If you think you don’t have room for an office, think again. With so many of us working from home, it’s important to create a workspace that divides the two. This example is a creative, functional office ideal for the minimal loving homeworker. It is small, but does the job.

Theresa Street Residence by Sonelo Design Studio

Although Australian multidisciplinary architectural and interior design practice Sonelo completed Theresa St Residence on a modest budget this does not impact upon the outcome. The seamlessly balanced renovation is a model of restraint and effortlessly disguises the old as new.

Above: Charlie Gladstone

Today is the first of a series interviews with retail influencers in design. Charlie Gladstone the founder of interior store Pedlars and The Good Life Experience Festival will start the proceedings.

What is your background?

I started off working in the music business, initially for a tiny record company that released novelty records. Some were actually quite big hits, though most of them were rubbish; having said that I still enjoyed it. Next I ended up at Warner Music, which was great, and soon I was managing a band that had a few hits, but it wasn’t particularly an industry that I loved so I decided to move onto something else.

When and where did you launch the company?

We launched Pedlars in 1997. It’s been an amazing journey since then. Continue Reading…

Sam Shadid edits his home in an orderly fashion

Controversial art director Sam Shahid recently revealed his tranquil home to the New York Times. Far removed from his hectic life in fashion this minimal three-storey apartment defines his personal style.

Shadid told Cathy Horyn: “At work, I have so much stuff around me. And then you come here and it’s serene, calm.”

He gave architect David Piscuskas free reign to reflect his “American Pure” style. Armed with a couple of references to work with — no lamps, Tadao Ando, and Kjaerholm, Piscuskas created a light, airy apartment inspired by hotels.

“I wanted a hotel, without the feeling of transience.” Continue Reading…

Flower arrangement

BV_15SS_05_1024x1024 copy

When styling flowers most people wouldn’t consider the composition, choosing to simply add the bunch to the vase. This flower arrangement is a refreshing change from the bouquet. We love this elegant display featuring visible roots. Why not update a corner or console with foliage using different scale plants, flowers and glassware. Add a shot of colour amongst the glass to add interest.

Office: Inspiration from Jaime Hayon

Jaime Hayon_Portrait

If you have a space at home to accommodate an office and need design inspiration, take a look at the enviable workspace of Spanish designer Jaime Hayon. Decorative floors are a great way to make a statement. Hayon laid tiles composed in the design of a fitted traditional rug as opposed to the usual repeated pattern. He balanced the interior with a few of his own simple designs such as the ‘Analog’ table, he designed for Republic of Fritz Hansen and by keeping accessories to a minimum. Designers need inspiration, here Hayon highlighted the white walls with a collection of mementos, images and tear sheets strategically placed in a row echoing the length of his desk. Inspired? We are.

See Jaime Hayon next month at Design Shanghai, 27-30 March.
