Jardin Chic from Galerie

Sometimes it’s comforting to go for the traditional and British brand Galerie, have got that covered (forgive the pun) with their new wallpaper collection Jardin Chic.

The designs are simple, vintage and pleasing to the eye. They would work perfectly as a feature wall in a bedroom, or if you are lucky enough to have a large space, could easily go across all walls.

The wallpaper has a very traditional yet up to date feel to it with the patterns not seeming over-crowded, clustered and fussy as many older styles tend to do. The colours are rich and well-matched.

The new range is really reasonably priced too with rolls starting at £24.95 for a 10 metre roll- great price for a quick update!

The Raj Tent Club

As well as being the place to hire and buy extravagant Indian and Raj-style tents (you know you need one…..) The Raj Tent Club also has some incredible British Empire and Raj inspired products. We have picked some of our faves below.

raj tent club, elephant doorhandles

Elephant door handles anyone?? Errrrr yes please! Made in India they are made from brass with black coating. £60 for the pair can’t be bad!

raj tent club, west indian canopy

We are also in love with this naive hand embroidered cotton folk art canopy from West India which can additionally be used as a colourful throw. We think would be a perfect gift for a new baby. Only £75 too!

The wesbite and shop also have some great bits of original furniture like this Palm Springs Aqua Metal Chair designed by Lisa Vandy. A modern take on the traditional.

Seeing as how obsessed we are with cushions of all types, we thought these beautiful cotton cushions, made in Kishangar, Rajasthan would be a perfect present for ourselves……or as a great new home gift for someone else.

Bookcases from Poltrona Frau

We’re pretty mad on books at Despoke. Living in a small London flat however, means our books are in piles around the bed- making perfect small tables for glasses of wine and water. If we did find ourselves with a massive abode suddenly thrust upon us, we’re pretty sure we would want something like Poltrona Frau’s Albero.

poltrona frau

After the huge success of the re-release of the freestanding Albero bookcase, a little-known yet very fascinating and masterful piece created by Gianfranco Frattini in the late 1950s, Poltrona Frau is launching the Albero Limited Edition in olive wood.

Who can spot the mini armchair? Given the English weather’s preference for rain, this might not be so practical, but when we finally own an olive grove, this will be making an appearance….

From the same parent company comes the gorgeous Drop bookcase- almost Scandi in its minimalism, but with the Italian fun found in the precarious cube on top. Nendo-designed, he used his native Japan as a colour-way- the grey of the brooks and the pink of the cherry blossom.

For more information on both styles, head here for Cappellini and here for Poltrona Frau.

Garden Stripes

If you are looking to add drama in the garden create a stripe effect using climbing plants teased into shape with the help of wooden strips. Try a mixture of plants – one stripe floral, the other foliage for an unusual composition.

Saturday Job: Clear the shed

Saturday Job: Clear the shed

Clearing the shed may not be the most pleasant of jobs, but imagine how satisfied you will feel when it is done. Focus on the display of items, by adding impact with the addition of floor to ceiling shelving and matching boxes. Create a working area, or a hideaway, using industrial fittings and a black and white palette.

Saturday Job: Create a gradated Box hedge

Saturday Job: Add a gradated box hedge

Use Box, otherwise known as Buxus sempervirens, to create a medium-height hedge featuring a gradation of colour, by planting foliage from dark to light. Typically the focus is on the floral aspect of a garden, but make sure you devote as much consideration you afford the flora elements, to the hedge, as once planted it is there for life, unlike some flowering species. So, push boundaries with your hedge, by choosing different shades to add visual interest for a thoroughly modern landscape.

Saturday Job: Design a barbecue space

Saturday Job: Design your barbecue space.

With Summer just around the corner custom build an outdoor cooking station to entertain your friends and family. Design a simple structure and add either a polished concrete surface for a slick look, or a raw finish which would look just as good.  Use simple crockery for a modern take and dress with plants.

Detail: Add a large work surface, shelving and pay attention to the finishing touches.

Materials: Concrete / polished / wood
