Christmas tree decorations….mainly baubles

As well as writing Christmas cards, which we genuinely love and find really therapeutic, we also love getting a Christmas tree, dragging it back home on the bus and then getting out all the ornaments from previous years and new ones we bought with great foresight in the January sales. Winning. Here are some of our faves from this year’s offerings.

School of Life this Christmas

The School of Life is open all year round, not just at Christmas. They do amazing courses and fun get togethers…..and they also do brilliant presents for you and your friends and family. Christmas is a tricky time. When gift-giving takes up so much time and energy, we can easily become impatient with the things we buy. Joining in with all those who, when they want to pinpoint the root cause of corruption in our age, only need to point the finger at our attachment to material things. We’re apparently sick because we’re so materialistic, so fixated on brand products and nice new things.

Barbican New Gift Shop

It’s getting to that time of year. It’s too early to properly think about the festive season, but the shops keep displaying tantalising nit bits that would be great under the tree. The Barbican are one step ahead with gifts that not only look good but we wouldn’t mind receiving as well as giving.

The Barbican is launching a new 330sqm retail space in the foyers this autumn. With a focus on the Barbican’s programme, its architectural and design legacy, the shop will also shine a spotlight on up and coming design talent.

Designers have been exclusively commissioned to reinterpret the Barbican’s incredible visual conventions into a retail context. This has resulted in brand new capsule collections from brands including Alfred & Wilde, Kate Farley, Lindsay Lang amongst other key designer makers. The result is a collection of impeccably designed objects that subtly convey the gravitas of the building. We are particular fans of these cool mugs by Aandersson. The shapes that would be cast by the shadows would be particularly pleasing.

Hackney based jewellery designer Hannah Davis’s pieces from her brand Wolf and Moon will also be in the new shop.

We are really into geometrics at the moment and this stand out piece would work well in a pared back colour scheme.

Designer Susi Bellamy has taken a gorgeous Italian Virgin and child scene and created a modern update. The colours are bang on without seeming garish.

Another gorgeous and very reasonable mirror set by James design retails at £195. This will definitely be going on the list.

by Lassen styling – Winter wonderland

We have featured by Lassen a number of times on Despoke- mainly because they produce beautiful furniture and objects like the below.

by lassen

by Lassen is a Danish design company who work with various designers, including two of Denmark’s greatest architects: Mogens Lassen and Flemming Lassen.

The Lassen brothers were extremely talented and were honoured with many awards and grants for their unique designs and iconic architecture. by Lassen’s mission is to continue the tradition of good design. Because good design lives on in new generations.

The way they design their pieces allow for beauty as well as comfort and in this cold and stormy weather, make us want to create our own winter scene to cosy up in!
