Hypnos: The architecture of sleep at Clerkenwell Design Week 2015

As mobile technology impacts on the traditional working hours, the ability to ‘switch off’ and rest is increasingly more important. Two leading design practices HASSELL and Draisci Studio will present an exhibition entitled Hypnos: The architecture of sleep, to address the issue at Sto Werkstatt’s main gallery during Clerkenwell Design Week 2015.

Francesco Draisci, Creative Director of Draisci Studio explained: “Sleep is mysterious. It cannot be avoided, only delayed. Could there be a future scenario in which a new typology of ’public sleeping parlours’ populate our city streetscape? Will the lack of a night’s sleep for many, create a future generation of day-nappers? We have collaboratively investigated these ideas to create a narrative environment that will explore future sleeping concerns.”

The outcome, a multisensory and interactive architectural space with an area for physical or mental rest will feature felt hammocks suspended from tall wooden structures placed throughout the gallery.

Buster Bulb from Buster & Punch

Above: Buster Bulb Collection – Gold, Smoked and Crystal, £39.99 each.

Two years ago Buster and Punch set themselves a challenge to produce a light bulb that took advantage of low energy technology, and also showed the world how environmentally conscious design could be “sexy.”  The new Buster Bulb is finished in the brand’s signature black and gold palette. A resin light pipe at the centre of the bulb emits a subtle ambient light, whilst at the same time throws a focused spot light onto surfaces below.

News: Furniture brand established by Terence Conran changes its name to Content by Terence Conran

Slide 1

The modern furniture brand established by iconic British designer Terence Conran in 2003 has changed its name — but retained its philosophy and aesthetic. Now called Content by Terence Conran the name pays tribute to the man who brought contemporary design to the masses. “My ambition has always been to make good design accessible by creating products that work well, are affordable and look beautiful.”

Following on from the success of the Wave sideboard new for SS15 is the geometric Stanford Sideboard — a substantial sculptural piece with a chevron motif cut into the pebble grey doors. This highly practical storage, resting on the white gloss frame perfectly embodies Sir Terence Conran’s philosophy.

HALFLIFE animated tunnel by Speirs + Major

On 6 March Award winning design practice Speirs + Major will reveal HALFLIFE a 90-metre pedestrian tunnel animation with 180 sources of light. Each source has five shades of red, green and blue, which meticulously blend with warm and cool white to display a diverse range of tones and saturations.

The light installation, produced in association with King’s Cross Central Partnership connects David Chipperfield’s One Pancras Square office building to the King’s Cross Underground network.

“HALFLIFE is inspired by British physicist Ernest Rutherford’s principal of decay, the concept being that visitors may witness the changing cycles of growth and deterioration through light and colour,” said Speirs + Major.
