Dubai Design Week

It may be a 7 hour flight away, but Dubai is fast becoming a key stop off on the design calendar. Pitching itself as the point where East meets West and where design lovers the world over can meet and celebrate and now with the respected Will Knight at the helm, Dubai Design Week, the leading festival in the region, starts tomorrow. Here are some key features and installations as well as brands and talks to make sure you visit.

Meaning ‘doors’ in Arabic, the exhibition is the only initiative of its kind to offer regional design talent from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA).  Originally consisting of independent pavilions hosting six countries, in 2017 the concept has evolved into a single pavilion in the heart of Dubai Design District (d3). Over 250 designers were reached through an innovative peer-selection process; ‘designer dominos’ , whereby in order to be considered for selection to exhibit, a designer is required to nominate the next designer to submit. Through designer-dominos, work from 15 countries are exhibited.

Downtown Design Dubai

Now in it s fifth year and part of the Dubai Design Week, Downtown Design is the only platform in the Middle East for the region’s trade professionals to discover original, high quality design from all over the world. It’s a chance for professionals to get together and network as well as see and buy from new and existing brands such as the Fendi Casa range above.

Super Design Market

One frustrating thing for design lovers in the Middle East is that not all brands have showrooms or are for sale. Super Design Market solve that problem. Supported by House of Folly, it places a pop-up concept retail space at the heart of d3 for the six days of the design week. Featuring a carefully blended range of international and local brands, the store allows visitors to browse and purchase high-quality design products, for gifts and homeware.  The concept store has been designed by Dubai-based creative agency Mobilsofa and features a range of international brands including Alessi, Brand Inc, Consept, iBride, OMY Design, Pallavi Dean, PB0110, SAUCE*, Tashkeel and Vitra.
