The Milky Way in your living room

Tokyo Based Studio Niji have created this simple light using the latest lighting technology.  Shoji Katsume, director of the studio, designed the Lactea lamp. Lactea means ‘Milky Way’ in Latin and is designed to express balance and continuity.

A sheet of IEL (inorganic electro-luminescence) – more commonly used for mobile phones – creates the structure of the lamp and emits light when a current is passed through it.

Slits in the material allow it to expand and contract, as well as pack flat for easy transport. It is available as a ceiling light, floor light and table light.

The seductive curves and spiral of Lactea are already catching attention. It was on show at Maison&Objet in January 2013 and will be at Via Design 2013 in Paris until the end of March, before heading to Milan. The Lactea has also been used in a promotional video for Lexus.
